Famous for having his face on the $100 bill, American president and scientist Benjamin Franklin actually stayed in Clapham in the 18th century. He is known to have conducted an experiment there, by pouring oil on the water of a pond on Clapham Common.

It’s thought that Mount pond is the likely place of the experiment whilst he was staying with his friend Christopher Baldwin at The Grange on West Side, which has since been demolished.

A letter dated 1779 from Baldwin to Franklin says

In another letter a few years later in 1783, he wrote

Look, my dear Sir, at the place from whence this is dated — have you forgot the many pleasant hours you have passed here? No, you have not. Have you forgot your throwing oil on the Pond near me, and instantly smoothing the troubled water — impossible!
