Did you know?

There is some speculation as to how Shepherd’s Bush got its name. One theory is that it originated from the use of the common land in the area as a resting point for shepherds who were making their journey to Smithfield Market in the City of London. Another theory is that Shepherd’s Bush might actually be named after someone who lived locally because in 1635 the area was recorded as “Sheppard’s Bush Green”.

Evidence of human habitation can be traced back to the Iron Age. Shepherd’s Bush first appears written down in the year 704 when it was bought by Waldhere, Bishop of London as a part of the “Fulanham” estate.

A map of London dated 1841 shows Shepherd’s Bush to be mainly rural, with much open farmland compared to the fast-developing nearby area of Hammersmith. Residential development really took off in the late 19th century, as London’s population continued to grow.
