Rubbish clearance and removal Hammersmith
The name Hammersmith was first recorded in 1294 and originally meant “smithy where a hammer is used”. It was the name of a parish, and of a suburban district, within the hundred of Osselstone. In the early 1660s, Hammersmith saw its first parish church, which was later named St Paul’s. It was built by Sir Nicholas Crispe who ran the nearby brickworks, which was also Hammersmith. The church contained a monument to Crispe as well as a bronze bust of King Charles I.
Hammersmith Bridge was originally designed by William Tierney Clark and it opened in 1827. It was the first Suspension bridge crossing the River Thames. Due to its popularity, it became overloaded, which led to a redesign by Joseph Bazalgette, which was built over the original foundations; it reopened in 1887. If you’re old enough, you’ll remember that in 1984/85 the bridge received structural support, and between 1997 and 2000 the bridge underwent major strengthening work. Hopefully, it will still be structurally sound for years to come.
